"At last the 1977 New Year's Day Concert"
As part of the Leicester Comedy Festival the LSO will once again be joined by Radio 4 and Classic FM comedian Rainer Hersch. The great capitals of the world are famous for welcoming the start of a brand new year with music. Vienna, Berlin, New York - each packs their fine concert halls with orchestras and audiences celebrating the turn of the calendar with waltzes, polkas and marches by the Strauss family. Not only has Leicester consistently failed to attract this glittering spectacle, in 1977 it forgot to welcome the new year at all...apparently. After their great success at the 2005 Comedy Festival, Radio 4's crown prince of musical comedy, Rainer Hersch, leads the Leicester Symphony Orchestra in a glorious return to put the matter right. Whether you are a music professor or couldn't tell one end of a violin from the other - 'At Last the 1977 New Year's Day Concert' will set you up with a smile on your face and a spring in your step to last a whole twelve months. Guaranteed. The programme will include (all arr. Hersch):
Johann Strauss II: Die Fledermaus Overture
Tchaikovsky: Waltz of the Flowers
Strausses: Pizzicato Polka
Johann Strauss II: Thunder and Lightning Polka
Smetana: Dance of the comedians
Johann Strauss II: Blue Danube
Plus many many others.

Wagner: Overture Rienzi
Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez
Shostakovitch: Symphony No.10
Guitar: Gary Ryan
Rodrigo's all time favourite concerto exudes the warm Mediterranean atmosphere of Spain. It is contrasted with Wagner's evocation of ancient Rome and Shostakovitch's masterly 10th symphony which journeys to the heart of Soviet Russia.
Free pre-concert talk at 6.45pm with Gary Ryan.
Retiring collection for the Lord Mayor's 'Caring for People' Charity Appeal - Loros and Heart Link.

Saturday 9th June 2007 at 7.30pm
Elgar: Violin Concerto
Brahms: Symphony No.4

"It's good! Awfully emotional! Too emotional, but I love it." Elgar's own description of his romantic masterpiece cannot be bettered. We celebrate the 150th anniversary of Elgar's birth. Alongside Brahms's 4th symphony, the crowning achievement of his career as a symphonist, this will be a double celebration of the romantic tradition.
Free pre-concert talk at 6.45pm with Katharine Gowers.
